TG4 ‘Dying Out’ series to highlight threat to Ireland’s wildlife

A new six-part nature series, to be broadcast on TG4 from next week, will chart species of Irish wildlife under threat in Galway and in other areas of the country, wildlife which is in danger of joining those animals which have fallen into extinction.

Our image today is of an original drawing done in 1958 by Belfast artist Raymond Piper (now deceased) of the beautiful staircase in the Great Southern Hotel. When one entered the hotel, the reception desk was to the left, there was a small corridor leading to the dining room on the left, and another leading to the bar on the right. Just past these was a comfortable lounge area, and at the end of this was this magnificent staircase leading to reception rooms upstairs, and directly to the station platform.

Pin Killers bowl over opposition in KBowl league

Pin Killers were the front runners for much of the Tuesday Trios Bowling League at KBowl but they were pushed all the way and had to dig deep in the end. On Tuesday night they were crowned champions and received the €600 prize money for first place.

BMX track a big hit with bikers

More than 100 people turned up to the launch of the floodlights at the BMX track on the Kilmaine road, Ballinrobe. John Murphy chairperson of Western Lakes CC highlighted that this work, which started back in 2007, has now paid dividends with large numbers from various backgrounds participating on a weekly basis.

Fifty years of soccer in Mervue

In the mid fifties, the corporation began to build the houses that make up what we now know as Old Mervue. Many young families moved to the area, and for the children, the open green areas in from Plunkett Avenue, and between Clarke and McDonagh avenues, became their playgrounds. They played all kinds of games here… Gaelic football, athletics, and especially soccer. It was on these green spaces that many well-known footballers first developed and honed their skills.

Somthing for everyone as Western Lakes launches summer events

Western Lakes cycling club has three busy months ahead with three big promotions in July, August, and September, catering for leisure, racing, and recreational cyclists. Club chairman John Murphy said: “Our club aims to bring cycling to all facets of the community, by promoting these events we create events that people want to take part in, and bring cycling to their doorsteps, this could not be done without having a great working club where all our members help out.” The three events are the Polkadot challenge, the Ballinrobe two day event, and Cornmarket to Castle fun cycle.
